EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed to help people recover from traumatic experiences and distressing life events. Rather than simply managing symptoms, EMDR aims to help the brain process memories that remain "stuck," reducing their emotional intensity over time.

When overwhelming experiences are not fully processed, they can continue to affect the way we think, feel, and respond to everyday situations. EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so they become less distressing, allowing healthier beliefs, emotions, and behaviours to develop.

How Does EMDR Work?

During an EMDR session, you'll be guided to briefly focus on a difficult memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or other alternating forms of stimulation. This process supports the brain's natural ability to organise and process memories, helping reduce emotional distress without requiring you to relive every detail of the experience.

Many people notice that memories become less overwhelming, emotional triggers decrease, and they feel more grounded in their daily lives.

Why Choose EMDR?

EMDR may be helpful if you've tried talking therapies but continue to feel emotionally stuck or overwhelmed by past experiences.

Unlike some therapies, EMDR does not require you to repeatedly describe traumatic events in detail. Sessions are carefully paced to help you feel safe while processing difficult memories, making it an effective approach for many people experiencing trauma, anxiety, or long-standing emotional difficulties.

Choosing the Right EMDR Therapist

EMDR is a specialised therapy that requires additional training beyond general psychology qualifications. Working with a therapist who has completed accredited EMDR training helps ensure treatment is delivered safely and according to current evidence-based practices.

What to Expect

EMDR therapy follows an eight-phase treatment approach. Before any memory processing begins, time is spent understanding your history, developing coping strategies, and ensuring you feel emotionally prepared.

Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual. The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, life experiences, and the concerns you wish to address.
